Kilimanjaro: Which Route Should You Choose?

Compare all seven Kilimanjaro routes — from the popular Machame to the scenic Lemosho — and find the perfect climb for your experience level, budget, and timeline.

Mount Kilimanjaro, at 5,895 meters (19,341 feet), is Africa's highest peak and the world's tallest free-standing mountain. Every year, thousands of trekkers attempt to reach Uhuru Peak, the highest point. Choosing the right route is the most important decision you'll make.

Machame Route (6-7 Days)

Difficulty: Challenging | Success Rate: 85% (7-day)
The most popular route, known for its scenic beauty and varied landscapes. The 7-day itinerary offers excellent acclimatization with the "climb high, sleep low" principle. You'll traverse rainforest, heath, moorland, and alpine desert before the final summit push.

Lemosho Route (7-8 Days)

Difficulty: Moderate-Challenging | Success Rate: 90% (8-day)
Approaches from the west and offers the most beautiful and remote first days. The longer itinerary provides the best acclimatization profile and highest success rates. Ideal for those who want a quieter, more scenic trek.

Rongai Route (6-7 Days)

Difficulty: Moderate | Success Rate: 80%
The only route approaching from the north, near the Kenyan border. It's the driest route, making it excellent during the rainy season. Offers a true wilderness experience with fewer crowds.

Marangu Route (5-6 Days)

Difficulty: Moderate | Success Rate: 65%
Known as the "Coca-Cola Route," this is the only route with hut accommodations. It's the shortest and cheapest option, but the rapid ascent profile results in lower success rates.

Northern Circuit (9 Days)

Difficulty: Challenging | Success Rate: 95%
The longest and newest route, offering the most complete Kilimanjaro experience. It circles the mountain almost entirely, providing stunning 360-degree views and the highest success rate.

Our Recommendation: For most climbers, the 7-day Machame or 8-day Lemosho routes offer the best balance of scenery, acclimatization, and cost.
